The ITIN, also known as a PIN, Tax ID or Taxpayer ID, serves as your identification number when you submit your tax return.

An ITIN is needed for people working in the United States who do not qualify to receive a Social Security number. The ITIN, is also known as a PIN, Tax ID or Taxpayer ID serves as your identification number when you submit your tax return.  

An ITIN allows you:

1. File U.S. Tax Returns

  • File federal and state tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service and state tax agencies.

  • Report income earned in the U.S. or U.S.-source income.

  • Required for self-employed individuals, investors, landlords, and dependents who are not eligible for an SSN.

2. Pay Taxes & Stay Compliant

  • Pay income taxes, self-employment tax, and other applicable taxes.

  • Avoid penalties related to failure to file or report income.

3. Open Certain Financial Accounts

  • Open bank accounts at many U.S. financial institutions.

  • Open investment accounts (policies vary by institution).

4. Claim Certain Tax Benefits

  • Claim refunds if overpaid.

  • Claim allowable credits, such as:

    • Child Tax Credit (limited; not refundable portion in many cases)

    • Additional credits when later adjusting status

  • Claim dependents who also have ITINs (subject to IRS rules).

5. Start and Own a Business

  • Form and own:

    • LLCs

    • Corporations

  • File business tax returns (Schedule C, Forms 1065, 1120/1120-S where applicable).

6. Receive IRS Notices & Establish Tax History

  • Build a U.S. tax compliance record, which may be helpful for:

    • Immigration matters

    • Future SSN issuance

    • Loan or credit applications

7. Receive Certain Payments

  • Receive rental income, contractor payments, and other taxable income reported under an ITIN (e.g., Forms 1099).

What documents do I need to apply for an ITIN number?

  • Per IRS Form W-7, to begin the ITIN application process, you will need to provide the following:

  • A complete IRS Form W-7

  • A U.S. federal income tax return

  • Your Passport or TWO (2) of the following documents: (including at least one identification with photo and one identification from your country):

    • National Identification Document (this must be current, and include your name, photo, address, date of birth, and expiration date)

    • U.S. driver's license

    • Foreign driver's license

    • Birth Certificate (required for a dependent unless a passport is being submitted and the passport has a date of entry into the U.S.)

    • State I.D.

    • Foreign Voter's Registration card 

    • Visa issued by the Department of State

    • U.S Military ID card

    • Foreign Military ID card

    • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services photo I.D.

    • Medical (for dependents under age 6 only)

    • School records (for dependents under age 18 only)
